Growing up in a modest income home, Khadija’s mother, a school teacher, encouraged her to draw on scratch paper when she was bored. Though her mother could not provide her with the best materials to use, she taught Khadija how to work hard to become better at everything she does. Khadija decided to learn about drawing by reading “how to books” from the library.
Around the age of nine, Khadija’s school met a well-known children’s illustrator, Jerry Pinkney. Mr. Pinkney was so impressed by Khadija’s art that he asked he requested to keep some for himself. This small recognition inspired her to one day pursue a career in art.
Khadija attended UNO’s School of Fine Arts for five years where she met and married her husband Jared Smith. To care for a growing family, she took a break from school for a period of time. Some years later, determined to pursue her career in Art, Khadija re-enrolled in school, this time with a k-12 endorsement. She soon began teaching art classes at Michaels and the 402 Arts Collective.
Khadija has always loved to draw and paint like her mother, she also loves to teach.
“There is just something special about passing knowledge down to the next generation.”
