A native of Omaha, Jeff Kolega recently spent two years completing a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance at Southern Oregon University. Since starting piano lessons at seven years old, music has been a significant part of his life, and percussion has been his main focus since starting drum set lessons three years later.
Spending several years studying percussion at the collegiate level, Jeff has expertise in many aspects of percussion, such as mallet percussion, symphonic instruments, world music and various styles of drum set performance, and he has experience teaching in classroom and private settings. Throughout these years, Jeff has also been consistently active as a drummer and percussionist in many non-academic projects, playing original music as a member of Diana and the Maries, drumming for indie songwriters Danny Sabra and Erik Jarvis, and prog rock songwriter Justin Carter. He is a member of the full-album cover band Rock and Roll Suicide, drums periodically for services at Faith Westwood United Methodist Church, and has been involved in musical theater productions at several local theaters and schools, including the Omaha Community Playhouse.
Jeff is particularly passionate about the intersection of rock & roll and classical music. He participated in the 2014 Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival in North Adams, MA, where he collaborated with innovative musicians and composers around the world, including legendary living composer Steve Reich and Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche.
